Stop Sticks Bring Pursuit To An End Near Platte River

PLATTSMOUTH – Cass County Sheriff William Brueggemann reports a high-speed chase Sunday night that resulted in the arrest of 24-year-old Shawn Bryant.

Omaha police alerted deputies they had terminated a pursuit of a man wanted in Douglas county driving a Chevrolet pickup with a passenger who was possibly a run-away teen from Council Bluffs.

A deputy attempted a traffic stop at 10:53 p.m., but the pickup accelerated to speeds up to 85 mph on Highway 34.

The pursuit continued through Elmwood and north at 100 mph.

A Nebraska State Trooper took the lead in the pursuit as the truck traveled into Sarpy County.

At the Platte River bridge, the state patrol successfully deployed spike strips and the tires on the pickup began to fail near Buffalo Road. Speeds were reduced to 50 mph.

The pickup stopped at Schram in Sarpy County.

The driver, 24-year-old Shawn Bryant of Omaha and a 17-year-old girl, who had been reported missing from Des Moines, were taken into custody.

Bryant is charged with felony operating a vehicle to avoid arrest.
