BEATRICE – It’s the heart of the construction season and the time of year you’ll notice a significant amount of street work going on.
Repairs have been underway on Dorsey Avenue, with part of the street closed off to traffic. Beatrice City Engineer James Burroughs says the street department has been doing some patching and repair.

Concrete construction will be getting underway on sections of Summit and Bell Streets. The work on Summit will be done from Seventh to Ninth Street. The Bell Street project is between Tenth and Twelfth Streets. Some of the work began on Summit this week.

Burroughs says the pavement is planned to be made thicker…about seven inches…in order to make the surfaces last longer.

Burroughs says the construction period on Summit Street is three to four weeks, then the contractor moves to the Bell Street Project. Residents along those sections receive letters about the pending work…indicating the streets will be closed for a period of time. The city also notifies fire, police and the garbage hauling company about the closings.
Also being done this summer, is milling and a new overlay of Ella Street, from Sixth Street, west to Third Street, and on Third Street between Ella and Court.

The mill and overlay will require city blocks to be shut off to traffic, especially heavy trucks. Part of the street, between Fourth and Fifth, sees truck traffic along with fire vehicles exiting the Beatrice Fire Department at the City Auditorium.

Ella Street is a truck route around the middle of the downtown, along with Market Street.
