Surviving a Health Scare, Wilber Senior Czech Dance Coach, Back in Rhythm

WILBER – He’s been teaching the Wilber Senior Czech Dancers for about thirty years now….and for a few years, a group of alumni dancers.

But, it nearly came to an end for Dirk Altman a few weeks ago… a diagnosis of meningitis.

He’s back leading Czech dancers at the 57th Annual National Wilber Czech Festival, and Altman says he’s grateful.

:10                  “to be here, I guess”

Altman is the brother of Oregon Ducks Head Basketball Coach Dana Altman.  Dana and his wife were back in town, for the celebration. Dirk’s dad, Lyle, still makes Czech Days a part of his schedule, as it becomes a family affair around early August.

Dirk Altman says the youth who participate in the dance groups have helped maintain the celebration through the years.

:28                  “for me”

Altman says it’s not unusual for people who live far away, to pencil in Wilber during Czech Days, no matter how far, the trip.

:28                  “be back home”

Altman says he hopes to keep leading the Wilber Senior Czech Dancers and the Alumni Group, for at least another five years.
