Syracuse Student Council Sets Candidate Forum

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse High School Student Council is moderating a candidate forum for several contested races in Otoe County.

The forum is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 30, at the elementary school on Seventh Street.

Anna Bohlken, co-president of the student council, said County Commissioner James Parsons approached her last fall regarding the idea for the candidate forum and the student council agreed to organize it.

Bohlken: “The student council will be asking the candidates questions. We don’t want it to be a debate forum, we want it to be a prompted question.”

Sheriff candidates Brian Briley, Jeff Lant, Colin Caudill and Dan Lionberger are expected to participate.

Candidates for Otoe County Board of Commissioners have also been invited, as are candidates for Syracuse city council and Syracuse school board.

Bohlken: “They’ve all been really positive about it. Everyone that we’ve invited, all the candidates we invited, have been yeses. So we have everyone that we wanted to be there, be there.”

She said the student council has been putting questions together with editing help from various community members.
