BEATRICE – One of two candidates for a District 5 seat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, appeared for a local election forum Tuesday night, in Beatrice.
Rob Schafer is currently on the board. His challenger, Robert Prokop, was unable to attend the Beatrice Chamber event.
Schafer chairs the Regents, this year, and was appointed about six years ago by former Governor Dave Heineman. He then won election.
Schafer, who farms and has a Beatrice law practice with three other partners, says he wants to continue to work with agriculture as a member of the Regents.

Schafer says its important to have someone on the Board of Regents whose family has young children. He and his wife, Andrea, have two children.

The incumbent says the University system must continue to emphasize its role as as “500-mile campus”, active in all communities. He says the university’s role is important in elevating young people’s lives.
