AUBURN – A Union man is charged with leaving the scene of an accident without rendering aid on Dec. 16.
Charges have been filed in Nemaha County naming 42-year-old John Saum as the driver of a pickup truck that rear-ended a Chevrolet MLT driven by 22-year-old Hannah Mitchel of Plattsmouth.
An accident report says Mitchell was traveling at 65 mph on Highway 75 when the pickup ran into the back of her car. She was able to guide the car to a stop on the highway shoulder, but later took herself to the emergency room of the Nemaha County Hospital with concussion symptoms.
While police were looking for a white pickup that Mitchel saw when it pulled up beside her alongside the road, Nemaha County dispatchers received a 911 call from Saum saying his truck had run out of gas.
Court records say deputies found Saum’s pickup about 22 miles from the accident scene. It was stopped in the middle of the road without any lights and deputies say they found Saum sleeping in the driver’s seat.
Saum told deputies he did not know anything about the accident, but that he had gone into the ditch.
Deputies say damage to the pickup is consistent with a rear-end collision with Mitchel’s car.
