Work underway on six-mile stretch of Highway 53 near Alexandria
Nebraska Highway 53 south of Alexandria will be undergoing routine maintenance, including bridge replacements, new culverts and more.

ALEXANDRIA – Work is underway on a six-mile stretch of highway in rural Thayer County.

Nebraska Highway 53 from Alexandria and then south to U.S. Highway 136 is undergoing several improvements.

Work includes bridge replacements, guardrail, grading, seeding, culverts, pavement patching and shoulder widening.

One‑lane traffic will be maintained at the bridge replacement locations with temporary traffic signals, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

A 10-foot width restriction will be in effect for the duration of the project. Anticipated completion is July 2020.

Motorists are asked to use caution while driving near construction zones, and to also expect delays.

Werner Construction, Inc., of Hastings, has the $7,859,581 contract.
