Wymore Continuing Search For Police Chief

BEATRICE-  The City of Wymore is still searching for a new police chief, but no one has applied for the job.

The city has been seeking a new person to lead the community’s police department, since former Chief Jay Welch left to take a law enforcement position in Ord, in mid-December.  Welch had been the Wymore Police Chief for a little more than three years.

Mark Meints, Head of Security at the Beatrice Campus of Southeast Community College, has been serving as interim Wymore Police Chief.

Meints says the search remains open, until the position is filled.  In the meantime, the Gage County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Meints, one full-time Wymore officer and two part-time officers.

Meints says the city has gotten some requests for information, but no applications for the job.  He says the position has been advertised in about 130 newspapers, Nebraska Workforce Development, a law enforcement training academy website and League of Nebraska Municipalities website.

Meints says the city is reviewing benefits for the position.  Questions he’s received about the police chief job include the availability of housing and possible employment opportunities for a spouse.  The City of Wymore requires the chief of police to reside in the community.
