LINCOLN — Falls City Sacred Heart used a barrage of 3-pointers Thursday to dominate its first-round game at the state basketball tournament.
The Class D-2 Irish made nine shots from behind the arc to roll past Cody-Kilgore 63-20 at Lincoln Southeast. Second-ranked Sacred Heart moved to 23-3 while the unranked Cowboys finished the season 12-9.
The Irish sank five 3-pointers in the first quarter to open a 23-4 advantage. Sacred Heart led 37-9 at halftime and 53-13 after the third quarter, triggering the mercy-rule running clock.
“I liked the way we got off to a fast start and showed no hesitation,” Irish coach Doug Goltz said. “I thought our quickness against their ballhandling also was a key.”
Cody-Kilgore committed 24 turnovers, compared to nine for Sacred Heart.
Tristan Keithley led the Irish with 13 points, including three treys. Jamie Stice and Drew Bippes each finished with 10.
Ten players scored for Sacred Heart, which reached state as a wild card. The second-ranked Irish are seeking their ninth title and first since 2008.
Claysen Davis had six points and five rebounds for the Cowboys, making their first state tourney appearance in 15 years.
