A victory Friday would help Syracuse build confidence for next season

SYRACUSE – Burton Brandt’s durability, athleticism and passion for football is leaving the Syracuse coaching staff feeling positive about the future of the program.

Brandt, a 5’11”, 170 pound sophomore running back and strong safety, has missed only one game during his first two years of varsity football.

He started at quarterback as a freshman when then senior starter Trevor Brinkman suffered a season-ending knee injury in the early part of the season. After he finished his first fall with the team, it was discovered he played half the 2017 year with a fractured vertebrae. An injury he has since recovered from.

Head Coach Rick Nordhues says Brandt is going to be a tremendous football player as he continues to grow and develop. He’s been consistent and Nordhues wants to get the ball in his hands more.

“It’s been a little bit challenging there, too. We’ve had to move a few guys around with injuries. We thought when Brandon Cavanaugh was back at fullback and we thought maybe we’d get him for the rest of the year that we could get the ball to Burton a little bit more often and more consistently. Brandon has just been struggling with his hamstring.”

Brandt has compiled 963 yards of total offense with 8 touchdowns. He leads the team in tackles (91), sacks (3) and has the team’s lone interception.

Syracuse (1-7) plays their final game of the season on the road in Tecumseh on Friday against Johnson County Central. The Thunderbirds (3-5) were eliminated from playoff contention in last week’s loss to Malcolm, 20-14.

Cavanaugh is not expected to play.

Kickoff at Johnson County Central High School is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will air on Today’s Best Country, B103 (103.1 FM, b103.fm and ncnsportsnow.com).
