For the Carroll Kuemper program, everything fell into place in 2018.
After losing in the Class 3-A state semifinals for three consecutive seasons, the Knights trailed Osage 13-11 in the fifth set of their semifinal match before rallying for a 15-13 win.
In the finals, Kuemper dropped the first set to Tipton before rebounding for a four-set victory to claim its first state championship.
The Knights’ leading hitter, South Dakota recruit Aimee Adams, captains The World-Herald’s star-studded large-school All-Western Iowa squad. The other captains are senior Sydni Huisman of Treynor in 2-A and junior Alex Knop of East Mills in 1-A.
The 6-foot-1 Adams becomes a three-time, first-team All-Western Iowa selection. The lefty averaged 3.66 kills per set while hitting at a .418 clip. She added a .929 serving percentage with 24 aces and developed into a reliable back-row player, totaling 362 digs to rank second on the team. Kuemper finished 45-1.
It’s hard to find a more well-rounded player in western Iowa than Treynor’s Huisman. The 5-8 senior averaged a team-best 5.03 assists per set in the Cardinals’ 6-2 attack. When in the front row, she averaged 2.15 kills per set, which was third on the team, along with a team-high .341 kill efficiency. Huisman served at a .945 clip with 34 aces, led the team in blocks with 58, and ranked second in digs with 330. Treynor (33-8) reached its first state tournament since 2012, falling to eventual champion Hull Western Christian in the quarterfinals after winning the first two sets.
In Class 1-A, East Mills’ Knop led her school to state for a second straight season and repeats as a first-team selection. She ranked fifth in her class with 4.46 kills per set while maintaining a .340 kill efficiency. Knop served 52 aces with a .902 efficiency, and she also led the Wolverines with 295 digs. East Mills finished 28-6 after dropping its state opener to Le Mars Gehlen.
The newspaper selected two, six-member teams in each of the three divisions. In all, 14 girls make repeat appearances.
Senior Camryn McClintock of Sidney is on an All-Western Iowa first team for a third straight season after earning second-team honors in 1-A as a freshman.
Two of the area’s top senior liberos, Jaden Daffer of Sidney and Maggie Wettengel of Council Bluffs St. Albert in 2-A, become three-time All-Western Iowa honorees. Daffer made the first team this season and Wettengel the second team.
In 1-A, Ar-We-Va senior Emilee Danner makes her second straight first-team appearance after picking up second-team recognition as a sophomore.
Two others move up from last year’s second team to their respective first unit this year: Clarinda senior Taylor Wedemeyer in 5-A/4-A/3-A (she was in 2-A last season) and CAM senior Madison Gettler in 1-A.
Five more are on their respective second team for a second consecutive year: Shenandoah’s Kealey Anderson and Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Madison Harms in 5-A/4-A/3-A, Treynor’s Konnor Sudmann in 2-A and Coon Rapids-Bayard’s Cassidy Baker and Fremont-Mills’ Sophie Phillips in 1-A. Tri-Center’s Brooklyn Hundt is on an All-Western Iowa team for a second straight year.
The All-Western Iowa selections are based on nominations by coaches and a look at statistical information, along with observations made by World-Herald staff writers.
