As No. 16 seed, Syracuse seeking first state tournament berth in 33 years

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse girls basketball team will try to qualify for the Nebraska School Activities Association State Basketball Championships for the third time in school history Friday afternoon.

The No. 16 Rockets (17-8) travel four hours west to North Platte to play No. 1 Mitchell (23-1) at 3 p.m. for the C1-1 District crown. The Tigers, located on the western edge of the state, will journey three hours to NPHS.

Syracuse Head Coach Andrew Pryor says advancing to the state tournament for the first time since 1986 would mean a whole lot to the school and community.

“That would be a really cool moment, especially with for the girls to be a part of history. As you mention, 1986 was quite a long time ago. Two of our varsity players had a mom that was on that team, so that would make it even more special to kind of continue that tradition. As a program and a school, that would just be a really major accomplishment for us. I hope that we’re able to get that done and I think we have a really good shot to.”

Mitchell features six seniors, including 6’3″ center Keyana Wilfred. The UNLV commit is averaging 19 points per game and 8.5 rebounds. The Tigers average 55.9 points per game. Syracuse scores 49.7 points per game.
