Coach says ceiling is high for this summer’s Nebraska City Legion Baseball team

NEBRASKA CITY – The Nebraska City American Legion Baseball team returns four starters from last summer’s state qualifying team that finished as the Class B runner-up in Alliance.

Along with the limited experience, one of the biggest obstacles the Post 8 Seniors are dealing with is trying to get healthy. Catcher and pitcher Jordan Williams is recovering from a broken ankle and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Meanwhile, outfielder and pitcher Trent Fahey is listed as day-to-day with a sore arm.

11th-year head coach James Widoe says they are struggling with depth early this season and he expects three or four kids to be playing both juniors and seniors each night.

“The kids that we’re asking these things of are going to be at the baseball field anyway. I see bright things ahead and obviously there’s a little bit of an adjustment period with almost a totally brand new group, but the ceiling with this group is incredibly high.”

Nebraska City replaces five starters including Brennen Bales (.390 average, 7 home runs, 42 runs, 30 RBI’s), Andrew Harrah – now an assistant coach – (.398 avg., 2 home runs, 33 RBI’s) and Sheridan Silvius (.398 avg., 30 runs).

The Post 8 Seniors wrap-up a three-game road trip to open the summer season. They’ll be at Auburn on Thursday before hosting Syracuse in their home opener on Friday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and can be heard on KNCY 1600 AM, 105.5 FM and

Nebraska City finished the high school season this spring with a record of 6-8 and lost to Gretna in the first round of the Class B-3 district tournament.
