Creighton baseball holds off ninth inning rally to complete series sweep over Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Creighton held on for an 8-6 win Sunday to complete a weekend sweep of the Terrapins.

Creighton led 1-0 through six innings and appeared to take control when it scored four in the seventh, one in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

Jake Holton hit a two-run home run in the seventh, while Jordan Hovey added a two-run shot in the ninth. Will Robertson, who finished the day 3 for 5, had RBI hits in the first, seventh and eighth innings.

Robertson finished with two doubles, while Isaac Collins had two doubles and a triple as nine of CU’s hits went for extra bases.

But Creighton had to use four relievers in the ninth to close out Maryland. The Terrapins had three run-scoring doubles and made it 8-6 on AJ Lee’s RBI single with two outs. Dylan Tebrake then got a foul out to end the game for his first save.

Evan Johnson was sharp as Creighton’s starter as he allowed no runs and two hits over 6⅓ innings to earn his second win.

Creighton will play its home opener Tuesday when it faces Nebraska at 6:30 p.m.
