Creighton lets another late lead slip away, falls 81-75 to Seton Hall

Creighton fumbled away another potential win in the final four minutes, dropping its fourth consecutive game in heartbreaking fashion. Seton Hall ended the game on a 14-2 run to clinch the 81-75 victory Sunday at the CHI Health Center.

The Jays (13-13, 4-9) yet again were in a favorable position in crunch time. Boosted by Ty-Shon Alexander’s hot shooting, they held a 71-64 lead with 6:24 left. They were ahead by 73-67 two minutes later, too.

But CU’s offense went cold down the stretch. Creighton missed 11 of its final 12 shots. It turned the ball over four times in the final three minutes.

Seton Hall (16-9, 7-6) converted two of those miscues into fastbreak buckets to tie the game at 73-73 with about 90 seconds left. Junior Myles Powell, who finished with 19 points, hit the go-ahead 3-pointer – he crossed over, pulled up and nailed the contested jumper to put the Pirates ahead for good with 48 seconds left. They hit 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to seal it.

The Jays, meanwhile, were left wondering how they let it slip away. Just like the last three games.

Creighton held a late lead at Villanova, at Seton Hall and at Xavier. But it failed to close each time.

The story was the same Sunday.
