LINCOLN — The past two Class B team champions, Elkhorn South and Lincoln Pius X, both moved all four entries into the semifinals Thursday during the opening day of state at Woods Tennis Center.
The Storm and Thunderbolts have 36 points each while Elkhorn, which has three entries in the semis, is third with 32.
The top three seeds in all four brackets advanced to the semis, which begins at 9 a.m. Friday. But three No. 5 seeds upended the No. 4 seeds in the quarterfinals.
One of those wins came in No. 1 singles as Elkhorn South’s Smaran Marupudi outlasted Gretna’s Zach Weber. Marupudi won the first set in a tiebreaker, and after Weber won the second set, the Elkhorn South junior won the super tiebreaker 10-6.
Marupudi will face top-seeded Mason Warner of Pius in the semis. Warner won 8-3 in their only matchup during the regular season.
The other semifinal pits Elkhorn freshman Zach Kuo against Elkhorn Mount Michael sophomore Isaac Gart. Kuo is 3-0 against Gart this fall.
Elkhorn South also has the top seeds in both doubles brackets. The No. 1 team of Jon and Ben Fink dropped a total of three games in their two matches Thursday. The No. 2 doubles team of Seth Fink and Michael Day lost one game in two matches. Fink and Day are 35-0 this season.
