EMC baseball roundup: Nebraska City, Plattsmouth both fall in first round

NEBRASKA CITY – The Nebraska City baseball team watched their Eastern Midlands Conference Tournament game vs. Waverly slip away early and they couldn’t recover in a 9-6 loss Tuesday at Clemmy Holmes Field in Nebraska City.

It was the second win for the Vikings over the Pioneers in five days. They defeated Nebraska City last Thursday, 7-5.

Waverly scored on a double by Jay Adams and a home run by Thatcher Kozal in the first inning. They scored four more runs in the third inning. The big inning was driven by singles from Ian Steinmeyer and Jonah Reiser, and a double by Kaleb Carrillo. The Vikings finished with 11 hits and Steinmeyer went 3-3 at the plate.

The Pioneers collected nine hits. They put up five runs in the third inning. Jordan Williams, Max Chaney, and Eli Southard all sent runners across the plate in the inning.

Maverick Wylder threw three innings, allowed five runs on three hits and struck out three in the victory. Adams recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

Garrett Bassinger took the loss for Nebraska City. He allowed eight hits and eight runs over five innings, striking out six.

Waverly improves to 6-2 and will play #1 Norris on Thursday in the semi-finals. The Pioneers (1-6) will continue the regular season at Blair (1-7) on Friday.

Grand slam helps Gretna build early lead, defeats Plattsmouth

GRETNA – Plattsmouth struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Gretna in a 12-2 five-inning loss to the Dragons in the first round of the Eastern Midlands Conference Tournament Tuesday in Gretna.

Gretna’s offense ignited in the first inning, scoring seven runs on a sacrifice fly by Collier Buttgen, a single by Quinn Mason, a walk by Tyler Behnham and a grand slam from Blake Grimm.

The Dragons tallied eight hits on the day. Mason finished 3-3 at the plate.

Zach DeVine got the win for Gretna. He went five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six.

Draven Ray took the loss for Plattsmouth. He lasted one inning, allowing two hits and seven runs while striking out one.

Kirkland Haswell and Nathan Konkler each collected one hit to lead Blue Devils.

Plattsmouth drops to 1-7 this season and will at Branched Oak (2-3) on Monday. Gretna is now 4-3 and will play Elkhorn in the semi-finals on Thursday.
