GRAND ISLAND – The Fairbury and Grand Island Legion Baseball teams will join six other clubs this weekend in the 2018 Hastings/Grand Island Round-Robin Tournament.
The two teams square-off Friday night at 7 p.m. at Ryder Park in Grand Island. Fairbury plays Kearney at 4:30 p.m. to begin the tournament.
The Landsharks have a 2-3 record and are hitting .366 this season. They have a total of 18 extra base hits, including five home runs and two triples, and have stolen 10 bags.
Adam Wasserman has hit two long balls this season and is hitting .500 with five RBI’s and five runs scored. Teammate Zach Holes has a team-leading .563 average with six RBI’s and eight runs scored, which also lead the team. Tanner Novotny is averaging .533 at the plate with a home run, five RBI’s and four runs scored.
Grand Island spent Memorial Day with the G.I. VFW raising flags to honor veterans and many of the players volunteer outside of baseball. Head Coach Jake Ritzdorf says this year’s team is a great group of kids to work with.
To be successful this summer, Grand Island’s pitching needs to give them quality innings and their defense will need to keep them in games until the offense has a chance to get runs, according to Ritzdorf.
Friday’s Fairbury/Grand Island game was scheduled to be broadcast live on News Channel Nebraska television and at ncnsportsnow.com, but due to the threat of severe weather in the Grand Island area, coverage has been cancelled.
