Four-run fifth inning propels Waverly over Nebraska City

WAVERLY – The Nebraska City baseball team took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning after trailing 2-0, but couldn’t hang on in a 7-5 loss to Waverly Thursday night at Lawson Field in Waverly.

Rhett Jordon’s RBI single in the first scored one of two runs in the inning for the Vikings. They took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when they scored four runs, including a two-run triple from Maverick Wylder.

The Pioneers had four-running of their own in the fourth. Eli Southard, Ethan Seyler, and Jace Becker all drove in runs.

Viking reliever Ben Carter earned the win. He didn’t allow a run on one hit in 1 1/3 innings. Jay Adams threw 1 1/3 innings to secure the save. Jordon lasted four innings in the start. He allowed four hits and four runs while striking out three.

Jordan Williams took the loss for Nebraska City. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and striking out four.

The Pioneers fell to 1-3 this season despite out-hitting the Vikings, 8-6. Becker went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nebraska City was scheduled to play Omaha North on Saturday, but the game has been postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast. Their next contest is set for Monday at home vs. Bellevue West (4-6).

Wylder led Waverly (4-2) with two hits in three at bats and two RBI’s. The Vikings are scheduled to play at Beatrice (1-4) on Friday, but inclement weather may play a factor.

The Pioneers and Vikings will play again in the first round of the Eastern Midlands Conference Tournament on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Clemmy Holmes Field in Nebraska City.
