LAKE CHARLES, La. — Creighton improved to 4-0 on the season as the Bluejays held off Texas State 6-5 in its opening game of the Lake Area Classic.
Creighton, which is averaging 10.3 runs per game, scored in each of the first four innings to build a 5-0 lead. The Jays hit solo home runs in the first three innings — Parker Upton in the first, Jordan Hovey in the second and Garrett Gilbert in the third. Jared Wegner and Gilbert added RBI singles in the fourth.
Gilbert delivered his third run-scoring hit in the sixth to put the Jays up 6-2, but Texas State pulled within 6-5 in the eighth and had the tying run at second base with no outs. But the Jays escaped that jam, then closer Bobby Kametas pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
Mitch Ragan worked the first seven innings to earn the win as he allowed four earned runs, six hits and struck out six. Gilbert was 3 for 3 with three RBIs at the plate.
Creighton will play two games on Saturday, facing Texas State at 1 p.m. and McNeese State at 4.
