IOWA CITY — Two doubles teams and a singles player from the Hawkeye Ten Conference have advanced to the semifinals of the Class 1-A girls state tennis tournament at the University of Iowa Tennis Center.
In doubles, unseeded Brielle Smith and Brooklyn Taylor of Glenwood knocked off third-seeded Kendall Evans and Josie Condon of Estherville-Lincoln Center 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the first round. The Ram duo then beat Katie Wichman and Sadie Hansen of Waverly-Shell Rock 6-1, 6-3 to reach today’s 10 a.m. semifinal, where they will face second-seeded Emily Jasper and Miyahko Coffey of Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Fourth-seeded sisters Nichole and Natalie Gilbert of Shenandoah earned a pair of easy straight-set wins to advance to the other 10 a.m. semifinal against top-seeded Taylor Hogan and Elysse Trost of Waterloo Columbus.
In singles, third-seeded Sophie Walker of Red Oak beat Isabel Schwabe of Carroll Kuemper 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and Brooke Jorgensen of Pella 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In today’s 10 a.m. semifinal, she’ll meet second-seeded Anatta Charoenkul of Fairfield, who lost a combined one game in her first two matches.
