Johnson-Brock at Meridian a “nice warm-up” before next week’s Class D2 clash

DAYKIN – Before the Class D2-1 showdown between No. 2 Falls City Sacred Heart and No. 3 Johnson-Brock on Oct. 18, the Eagles (6-0) travel to Daykin to play another district foe, Meridian (5-1), on Friday.

The Mustangs have 16 sacks this season and have forced three interceptions. The Eagles will counter with a passing attack led by senior Cole Fossenbarger, who has thrown for 1,072 yards, 24 touchdowns and no interceptions. Junior Ty Hahn has 436 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. Sophomore Kaden Glynn adds 256 yards receiving and four scores.

Huskerland Prep Report Publisher Bob Jensen is glad for the Meridian’s success, but like everyone else in Class D2, “they’re probably in over their heads against Johnson-Brock.”

“Meridian was in the dumps a couple years ago. Last year they made a giant step forward. Not only were they a good team, they were competitive even when they were losing. To me that is a huge step for a program to take. This year, they’ve gone the extra mile. They’re 5-1 and it’s a good football team.”

Jensen expects the Mustangs will have a good seed in the postseason.

Meridian averages 299 yards per game on the ground and is led by Wyatt Haverluck. The junior has rushed for 822 yards on 89 carries and 14 touchdowns.

The Eagles and Mustangs kickoff Friday at 7 p.m. The game will air live on Otoe County Country (KNCY 1600 AM, 105.5 FM, ncn21.com and ncnsportsnow.com).
