Kelvin Gutierrez’s homer gives Chasers the win after suspension, but Memphis takes second game

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Storm Chasers completed their comeback of Saturday’s suspended game in a 5-3 win before the Redbirds won Sunday’s regularly scheduled game 3-2.

The Chasers won the suspended game when Kelvin Gutierrez hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning. Omaha had scored three times in the seventh inning, tying it 3-3 Saturday night before the game was suspended by rain. When it resumed Sunday, Erick Mejia singled before Gutierrez homered to left center.

Josh Staumont pitched the final two innings for the save. Jake Newberry, who pitched two scoreless innings Saturday, earned the win.

Gutierrez gave Omaha a 2-0 lead in the second game when he drove in a pair with a third-inning single. But Memphis’ Adolis Garcia hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning, which stood up for the win.

The Chasers only had one hitter reach base in the last five innings.

The rubber game of the five-game series will be Monday at 11 a.m.
