Lourdes putting pieces together as district final looms

NEBRASKA CITY – With only one player with varsity experience returning, a lot of freshman and sophomores playing, and the challenges of a tough schedule – including back-to-back games against Class C1 opponents Boys Town and Bishop Neumann – the Lourdes Central Catholic boys basketball team knew this could be a trying season.

The three-time Class D1 defending champions were 1-11 on Jan. 15 and were struggling to find their identity on offense and defense.

Head Coach Joe Tynon – in his 13th season with the Knights – toyed with a bunch of different formations throughout the year, trying to find balance of what’s going to make them successful this year and over the next few years.

“We tell the kids, ‘Keep focusing, keep going. I know it’s hard with the wins and losses, and those get a little taxing at times and it’s hard to come to work everyday.’ I told them once we get to sub-districts, we’ve got an opportunity. They did a great job of staying focused.”

Since the middle of January, the Knights are 6-5 and defeated Pawnee City and Omaha Christian Academy to win the Class D1-1 Sub-District Tournament in Johnson last week.

Lourdes Central Catholic (7-16), a win away from their fourth-straight trip to the state tournament, is the No. 15 seed in Monday’s D1-2 District Final vs. No. 2 Overton (20-3) at Friend High School. Tip-off on KNCY 1600 AM, 105.5 FM and ncnsportsnow.com is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Class D1 No. 5 Eagles topped No. 2 Elm Creek in the D1-9 Sub-District Tournament championship on Thursday, 76-63. They feature two seniors – Morgan Wallace (20.7 PPG) and Braden Kizer (21.3) – who have scored over 1,000 career points.

The last time the Knights lost in the state tournament was in 2014 (they did not qualify in 2015). The opponent: Overton.
