BEATRICE – High school basketball teams from around southeast Nebraska will descend on Beatrice this week for the annual MUDECAS Tournament.
The girls begin play Monday with an A Division loaded with state tournament contenders. The top seed goes to last year’s winner and reigning Class D2 State Champion Falls City Sacred Heart (11-0). Undefeated Meridian (11-0) is the two seed and will look for a rematch with Sacred Heart after losing to them in overtime in the 2017 MUDECAS final.
Rounding out the top four seeds in the A Division are a pair of one-loss teams in #3 Exeter-Milligan (11-1) and #4 Bruning-Davenport/Shickley (10-1). All A Division games will be played at the Beatrice City Auditorium.
Sterling (5-7) is the top seed for the girls B Division, with Southern (6-5) as the second seed. HTRS (2-9) and Pawnee City (2-10) round out the top half of the B Division, which will play first and second round games at Southeast Community College. Last year’s B Division final saw Freeman edge Southern by one point. The Lady Falcons are the 8th seed in this year’s A Division and will face Sacred Heart in the first round.
The boys begin play Tuesday with Sacred Heart (9-1) atop the A Division with Johnson-Brock (9-2), Freeman (9-3) and BDS (9-2) rounding out the top four seeds. The 2017 A Division winner, Parkview Christian (6-5) is the five seed and will open against BDS.
Exeter-Milligan (9-2) claims the #1 seed in the B Division, followed by Southern (6-5), Pawnee City (5-6) and HTRS (4-7). Sterling (6-6) was the 2017 B Division winner, knocking off Tri County on a buzzer beater. They are the #6 seed this year and face Pawnee City in the first round.
