Class A

1. Omaha Marian 18-3 2

2. Millard West 11-6 4

3. Millard North 17-3 1

4. Omaha Westside 12-4 5

5. Lincoln Southwest 16-2 3

6. Gretna 14-4 4 (B)

7. Lincoln Southeast 15-2 6

8. Papillion-La Vista 15-5 7

9. Millard South 12-6 9

10. Lincoln East 10-6 NR

COMMENTS: How will the exodus of players to club soccer impact the top teams? Marian and Millard West appear to have lost the least, and thus start in the top two spots. The three teams behind them, a group that includes defending champ Millard North, all have major holes to fill without the club players. Gretna moves to Class A and has the talent to compete immediately. Its first chance to prove that will be a Tuesday match against Marian.

Class B

1. Omaha Skutt 16-3 2

2. Elkhorn South 17-3 3

3. Omaha Mercy 12-7 5

4. Elkhorn 16-3 1

5. Omaha Roncalli 13-4 7

6. North Platte 12-4 10 (A)

7. Columbus Scotus 9-4 6

8. Columbus 11-4 8

9. Hastings 11-7 9

10. Waverly 13-4 10

COMMENTS: Most years Omaha Skutt and Elkhorn South would be odds-on favorites to meet for the title. But there’s no lack of challengers this season. Add Class A qualifier North Platte into an interesting mix of teams that could contend with the top two. Defending champion Elkhorn will be without All-Nebraska captain — and the program’s all-time leading goal scorer — Skylar Heinrich, who enrolled early at Creighton.

6. Millard West 6-9 NR

7. Papillion-La Vista South 9-8 NR

8. Omaha Westside 18-2 2

9. Omaha Central 8-9 NR

10. South Sioux City 17-5 6

Class A

1. Kearney 18-2 1

2. Omaha Creighton Prep 16-4 5

3. Omaha South 19-2 3

4. Lincoln Southwest 16-2 4

5. Grand Island 13-5 5

6. Millard West 6-9 NR

7. Papillion-La Vista South 9-8 NR

8. Omaha Westside 18-2 2

9. Omaha Central 8-9 NR

10. Elkhorn South 14-7 2 (B)

COMMENTS: A much closer Class A than in recent years, there are contenders throughout the Top 10 — and maybe even beyond. Defending champion Kearney and its returning core — six starters, top three scorers, All-Nebraska keeper — get the nod at No. 1. The Bearcats didn’t give up a goal in beating Creighton Prep, Omaha South and Omaha Westside during last year’s title run. Omaha Bryan and Class A newcomer Gretna miss the initial cut, but have enough to be in the mix soon.

Class B

1. South Sioux City 17-5 1

2. Omaha Skutt 15-5 3

3. Omaha Gross 12-6 7

4. Schuyler 14-3 6

5. Elkhorn 14-4 5

6. Lexington 11-5 10

7. Lincoln Pius X 8-8 NR

8. Columbus 9-6 9

9. Crete 14-3 8

10. North Platte 8-8 8 (A)

COMMENTS: A No. 1 vs No. 2 matchup is on tap before the season is a week old as Skutt is slated to visit defending champion South Sioux City on Tuesday. The class loses two title contenders with Gretna and Elkhorn South making the move to Class A, but will have depth after the top tier. North Platte, a qualifier in Class A a year ago, and Lincoln Pius X make the move to Class B.
