EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Northwest Missouri State became the fifth team ever to finish a season with an unbeaten record and won their second NCAA Division II national championship in three years Saturday afternoon with a 64-58 win over Point Loma at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
Northwest, which finished its season 38-0, led 50-46 before Ryan Welty and Joey Witthus hit back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 10 with 6:42 left. Point Loma got closer than five the rest of the way.
The tournament’s most outstanding player, Trevor Hudgins, had 12 points and 6 assists for the Bearcats. Witthus led the team with 24 points. Ryan Hawkins added 9 points and 12 rebounds.
The Sea Lions were led by Division II player of the year, Daulton Hommes. He finished with a game-high 26 points.
