Overcoming Mistakes and Missed Opportunities the Keys for Lourdes

NEBRASKA CITY – A fumble recovery. A successful onside kick to start the second half. A muffed punt recovery. All were big opportunities for the Lourdes Central Catholic Knights  (1-2) last week against Exeter-Milligan-Friend, but most went by the wayside when E-M-F pulled away late in the game and defeated the Knights 48-12.

Lourdes coach Clay Carlton wants to cash in on those opportunities Friday night when they host undefeated (2-0) Bruning-Davenport-Shickley. Carlton says the Knights had a tough time getting things moving once they did have the ball, and couldn’t always turn those turnovers into points. One or two mistakes on several plays were the difference, whether it was missing a block, not lining up properly, committing a costly penalty or a runner not hitting the hole. If those small things had gone the other way, it may have been a much different result on the scoreboard.

The Knights can’t afford to make those errors against an opponent like B-D-S, who come into the game off two mammoth victories by a combined total of 98-6. The Eagles are also the defending state champs and have won the title twice in the last three years.

Carlton looks to protect the football, play physical and take B-D-S out of their comfort zone — execute on those three keys, and he believes the Knights can come away with a big-time victory.
