BENNINGTON – Nebraska City pitchers Jacob Shannon and Quintin Holman gave up six combined hits and shutout Beatrice, 4-0, Saturday in the Class B2 District Tournament semifinals in Bennington.
It’s the second time in less than two weeks the Pioneers have defeated the Orangemen. Nebraska City beat Beatrice, 4-0, on April 22 when Jordan Williams pitched a complete game shutout.
Shannon was credited with the victory. He threw 5 2/3 innings, gave up no runs on five hits and struck out eight. Holman earned the save in his 1 1/3 innings of work. He gave up just a hit and struck out three.
Leading 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Pioneers tagged on three more runs thanks to RBI’s from the Levy cousins, Tyler and Bryce.
Eli Southard finished 2-2 with a pair of singles.
Peyton Murphy went 2-4 at the plate for the Orangemen, including a double.
Qwin Zabokrtsky surrendered four runs on hive hits over 5 2/3 innings. He also struck out four batters.
Nebraska City improves to 10-7 and will play the winner of Thurston-Cuming County and Bennington in the district title game on Monday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to next weekend’s state tournament at Werner Park. Monday’s game will be carried live on Otoe County Country (KNCY 1600 AM, 105.5 FM and ncnsportsnow.com).
Beatrice finishes the season at 6-11.
