Storm Chasers drop opener against 2018 champion Memphis Redbirds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Redbirds, last season’s Triple-A champions, opened the 2019 season Thursday night by rolling past the Omaha Storm Chasers 9-2.

The Chasers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Kelvin Gutierrez’s infield single brought in Cheslor Cuthbert.

But Memphis responded with two in the bottom of the second, four in the fourth and three in the seventh for a 9-1 lead.

Cuthbert brought home Omaha’s second run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as Nicky Lopez scored.

Gutierrez had two of Omaha’s seven hits in his Triple-A debut. But the Chasers were just 1 of 9 with runners in scoring position.

Starter Heath Fillmyer took the loss as he allowed six earned runs in four innings. Fillmyer walked four batters, and as a team, the Chasers issued nine walks and hit four batters.

Austin Gomber, who made 11 starts and went 6-2 for the St. Louis Cardinals last season, picked up the win as he allowed a run and six hits over five innings.

The teams continue their series Friday at 7:05 p.m. Arnaldo Hernandez is expected to start for the Chasers.
