A couple in Texas named their newborn son Creighton after watching the Bluejays men’s basketball team on TV.
Jake and Chelsea Maddox have never been to Omaha, have no connection to Omaha and haven’t seen the Jays play in person. They’re just big college basketball fans.
The now-married Fort Worth schoolteachers were watching Creighton lose to Villanova in February 2017 when Chelsea turned to Jake and said, “I love that name.”
“’Nova?” Jake said.
No, Creighton. He loved it, too, and thus Creighton leaped over Keller, Hendrix, Triar and Langdon to the top of their boy names list.
“It stuck all the way until we found out we were having a boy,” Chelsea said.
Baby Creighton finally came into the world on Jan. 4, 2019, one day before his due date. It seems he didn’t want to miss the Jays women’s basketball team play Villanova that same day. (The Creighton women lost 54-52 in that one.)
Chelsea sent Creighton University a message on Twitter when her son was born. The school then sent the Maddox family a blue-and-white Creighton University bib and a note of congratulations.
Most people the Maddoxes have told in Texas aren’t familiar with the Omaha university, Jake said. They say things like “Oh, that’s very unique,” or “Is it spelled like C-r-e-y or C-r-a-y? Like Peyton Manning or Walter Payton?”
