Thursday’s Northwest Missouri State college football capsule

Northwest Missouri State at Washburn

6 p.m. at Topeka, Kansas

Outlook: Both teams won openers with strong defensive efforts. In coach Rich Wright’s debut, the top-ranked Bearcats handled then-No. 4 Emporia State 34-0 to increase their winning streak to 31 games. Washburn held Northeastern State to 21 yards on 31 rushing attempts in a 31-7 win. Northwest Missouri has won the past 12 meetings in the series.

Player to watch: Northwest’s Shawn Bane had three catches for 93 yards and a TD last week. Two years ago, Bane had 11 catches for 124 yards against Washburn.

Notable: Zach Martin became the fifth Bearcat to throw for at least 300 yards in a season opener. The senior from Omaha North was 18 of 26 for 314 yards and a touchdown.

UNK at Emporia State

7 p.m. at Emporia, Kansas

Outlook: Their openers ended on much different notes as UNK, winners of one game the past two seasons, downed Missouri Western 14-3. Emporia State was outgained 503-246 in total yards as Northwest Missouri State rolled to a 34-0 win. Emporia State defeated UNK 34-7 last year.

Player to watch: UNK ran the ball 40 times last week as Millard West grad Thomas Russell shouldered most of the load, running for 72 yards on 24 carries.

Notable: The last time UNK won back-to-back games was October 2014.
