Weeping Water snaps 35-game losing streak by winning three-straight

WEEPING WATER – As the high school football season nears the halfway point in the regular season, the most surprising team in the entire state of Nebraska might just be in Cass County. That’s according to Huskerland Prep Report Publisher Bob Jensen.

Weeping Water began the year with a 35-game losing streak. Their last win was a 7-6 victory over Southern on Oct. 18, 2013.

The losing streak is now history.

Moving up to Class D1 from D2, the Indians have started the year with a 3-0 record. Their victories include Omaha Nation, Heartland and HTRS.

Joel Haveman, who previously served as a football assistant coach and once upon a time was an outstanding football and basketball player for the Indians, became the head football coach this fall.

Jensen compares Haveman’s return to Weeping Water to Scott Frost’s return to Nebraska: a winning player returning to his alma mater to reestablish a winning culture.

“Joel is a big deal in Weeping Water and if those kids don’t know about Joel, their parents do. Him coming in there and finding a team that has got a lot of experience coming back. They got some size on the line. Slater Mozena is an outstanding all-around player. Maybe it was just laying there just needing a little fire lit and looks to me like that certainly happened.”

Haveman also coaches the girls basketball team.

The Indians host Thayer Central (0-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.
