LINCOLN – The Auburn Bulldogs will play for their first state boys basketball title Saturday morning.
Auburn defeated the defending state champions Wahoo by 13 points Friday morning. The Bulldogs won 59 to 46.
The game follows Auburn’s 44 to 42 win over Grand Island Central Catholic. That game was the school’s first state basketball win in the state tournament since 1967.
In a post-game interview junior CJ Hughes said a basketball culture is growing in Auburn. “We’re here to win,” he said.
Coach Jim Weeks said it was obvious that Wahoo was missing players to injury and had some illness issues on its starting roster.
He said his team handled Wahoo’s pressure and rebounded well.
Wahoo took a 10 to 2 lead to start the game. Auburn led by seven after three quarters. CJ Hughes had 12 second-half points.
B103 FM game balls went to Winston Cook, who scored 17 points for Wahoo. For Auburn, it went to 6’7″ junior center Josh Lambert with nine rebounds and 13 points. He was five of eight from the free throw line.
Tip-off for the championship game is at 9 a.m.
