Utilities “Sparky and Digger” Prevail In Scarecrow Contest

NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City Utilities’ “Sparky and Digger” prevailed in Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce’s 2017 scarecrow contest.

A total of 800 valid ballots were cast in this year’s contest, which featured scarecrows in front of 34 businesses.

Sharon Crunk said the utilities decided on two scarecrows in hopes of improving on last year’s fourth place finish.

Crunk: “Well, we’ve got Sparky. He’s representing our linemen, our electrical linemen and he’s climbing a pole. It’s a high voltage pole. Then we have our other guy from gas and water. His name is Digger. He’s got a shovel in his hand. He’s ready to go to work and he loves his job.”

Crunk said the display also had globe lights and LED light strings to catch voter’s eye.

Commercial State Bank was second and the News-Press and Valentino’s tied for third.
The utilities won a pizza party. Other prizes included apple donuts, cider and cookies.
