Betty L. McCreary, age 94 passed away on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017 at Bickford Cottage in Lincoln, NE, formerly Nebraska City.
Betty was born on September 14, 1922 on a farm west of Redfield, KS. Her father, Albert was in World War 1 when he met a family from France that had a daughter named Betty Lou and that is where her name came from. When she was 8 months old she caught whooping cough and pneumonia and almost died. She had 7 brothers and 1 sister. They all shared 2 bedrooms. There was not electricity, radios or TV and no car most of the time. They heated irons to help keep the beds warmer in the winter.
She attended the Redfield Grade School and Uniontown High School. She graduated from Fort Scott Community College and became a teacher. Everett Bybee was her high school sweetheart and always knew she would marry him. She was a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. Betty married Everett in a double ceremony that included her brother Warren and his bride on January 23, 1943.
Betty and Everett both taught at the school in Redfield. They were the only 2 teachers at the school. Betty taught the younger students and Everett taught the older classes. They also ran the only grocery store in town. After moving to Omaha, NE, Everett passed just before their 25th wedding anniversary due to an auto accident in 1967.
Betty was fortunate to find love again, through mutual friends she met and married Roger McCreary and moved to Nebraska City with her children. She was beyond blessed to extend her family. She opened and ran a craft store in the loft above Roger’s Otoe Paint & Wallpaper store. Together they loved to travel seeing the sites of many countries.
She enjoyed quilting, sewing, card games, socializing, gardening and entertaining. She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she served various offices over the years. She also belonged to the P.E.O. (Chapter C.F. Church Circle); the Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers sorority and was a former Opti Mrs. She had a kind and generous heart and especially loved spending time with her family, greeting each with smiles and hugs.
Betty is survived by her two sons: Cliff Bybee and wife Diane of Lincoln, NE and Scott Bybee and wife Donna of Sherwood, AR; two step-daughters: Marcia Childress and husband David of Tehachapi, CA and Phyllis Usher and husband Brian of Colorado Springs, CO; six grandchildren: Shanna “Tammy” Ravens (Marc) of Burleson, TX; Steve Barnes; Lindsay Wietfeld (Jason) of Riverside, IL; Bryan Bybee (Whitney) of Lincoln, NE; Justin Bybee (Kate) of Sherwood, AR and Shawn Bybee (Brittany) of Sherwood, AR; four step grandchildren: Wes Kriesel (Darlene); Marielle Kriesel; Jeff Hatten (Melody); Amy Becker (Jess); numerous great and great-great grandchildren; four brothers: Warren Davis, Albert Davis, John Davis and Gerald Davis; other family and friends.
