Donald Lee (Don) Wampler, age 76 of Nebraska City, passed away on October 4, 2018 at Bryan LGH West in Lincoln. Don was born on December 25, 1941, in Hartville, MO to Howard and Dorothy (Edwards) Wampler. He grew up in Riverton, IA, and graduated from Sidney (IA) High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Darlene Smith in 1961, and settled in Nebraska City, NE. Don worked at American Meter for 42 years, and retired as a work leader in 2003. Don’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He and Darlene traveled near and far to be with their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren. Don especially loved attending their sporting events and activities. He was a member and trustee of First Baptist Church of Nebraska City. He loved Husker football and volleyball, Cardinals baseball, and Packers football. Don greatly enjoyed working with his hands, especially building and renovating projects, riding his John Deere mower, and tending his many flower gardens. He loved having a Christmas birthday, and his Christmas light display was a highlight of the Christmas season in Nebraska City. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Darlene (Smith) Wampler, their beloved toy poodle, Precious; their four children, David (Tammy) Wampler of Lincoln; Dan (Rosa Vallecillo) Wampler of Omaha; Doug (Judith) Wampler of Nebraska City; and Deanna (Mike) Cheney of Council Bluffs, IA; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great, great-grandchildren; brother, Owen (Patricia) Wampler of St. Paul; sisters, Betty (Darold) Kuhlman of Horseshoe Bend, ID, and Mary Wampler of Nebraska City; brother-in-law, Jerry McMann of Auburn; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Jim) Whipple of Clarinda, IA; sister-in-law, Ila Gray of Nebraska City; sister-in-law, Dora Smith of Northboro, IA, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carl Wampler; sister, Evelyn (Wampler) McMann, and niece Caren Wampler.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 8, 2018, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Marshall Funeral Chapel, 1109 First Corso in Nebraska City with the family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at the First Baptist Church, 302 S. 7th St. in Nebraska City with burial following Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Following the graveside service, a luncheon for family and friends will be served at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Don’s name to First Baptist Church of Nebraska City.
