On November 12, 2018, Kenneth (Kenny) H. Delavan, age 81, passed away after a hard fought seven year battle with cancer. Kenneth Harley was the oldest son of Dallas Wilford and Lucille Marie (Kirk) Delavan. He was born in rural Mills County, IA where he lived with his parents and younger brother Lyle until the family moved to Tabor, IA during his high school years. He attended country school and Tabor High School, graduating in 1955. On July 2nd, 1957, he and Sandra Kay (Susie) Bain were united in marriage at the First Methodist Church in Coin, IA. They were richly blessed with the birth of two sons and three daughters: Steven Alan, Shari Sue, Debra Louise, Michael Richard, and Amy Jo. They were also blessed with fifteen beautiful grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
As a young man, Kenny worked for various farmers in the Tabor area. After marriage the couple lived in Glenwood, IA where Kenny worked at Safeway. After moving to Council Bluffs, IA he worked as a Hamm’s Beer route driver and for Super Value. In 1973 the family moved from Council Bluffs to Tabor, where Kenny began selling auto parts and working on cars while still working at the grocery store in Council Bluffs. In 1976 he built the building that became known as Delavan Auto Parts (NAPA) in Tabor, which he owned and operated until his health forced his retirement in 2017.
Kenny was most proud of his wife, his children and their families. Although he worked long hours to provide for his family, in his leisure Kenny enjoyed spending time with his family and special dog Marley, drinking Pepsi, going to car races, buying and selling cars, tinkering with his tractors, camping, fishing, boating, square dancing, listening to classic country music, and imparting wisdom and car lore to young people. Some of Kenny’s favorite moments were with his grandchildren giving them tractor rides, pulling them in the wagon behind the mower, and generally teasing them to no end. He always looked forward to the annual summer vacation to southern Missouri where he was joined by many family members and friends.
Family members left with cherished memories include Susie, his wife of 61 years; his sons Steve Delavan of Sidney, IA and Mike (Sheila) Delavan of Glenwood, IA; daughters Shari (Brian) Pavelka, Debra (David) Cook, both of Glenwood, IA, and Amy (Larry) Sawyer of Corning, IA; daughter-in-law Susan Delavan; grandchildren Leslie Delavan (Tom McFarlane), Cory (Jenny) Delavan, Lindsey (Brian) Donnelly, Lauren (Kyle) Clingan, Candi Delavan, Brenda, Kaylena, Kelsey, and Matthew Pavelka, James, Jared, and Hannah Cook, Brandon and Haleigh Delavan; great-grandchildren Lauren, Ashlyn, Althea, Niamh, Thomas, Clara, Lucy, Paisley, and Beckett; his brother Lyle Delavan of Glenwood, IA; nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
