LEON “LONNIE” WARD, age 83 of Anderson, IA died Monday, March 12, 2018 at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Omaha, NE following a brief illness. Lonnie Ward was born to Carl and Dorothy (Study) Ward on May 1, 1934 in Riverton, IA. In his early childhood days, they lived in the Riverton area and Gillette, WY. His family moved back to Riverton in the mid 1940’s.
Lonnie worked various jobs until he went into the service in 1954. He served 2 years in the U.S. Army and was Honorably Discharged in 1956. Upon being discharged, he met Virma Swaink and they were married on July 28, 1956. To this union they had 2 children, David and Ronald.
In his early working years, he worked for Western Brick and for the Government taking care of Grain Storage. But his real passion was to run Heavy Equipment and for nearly 40 years he built terraces, cleared timber, built dykes and other various construction work for Farmers in the area.
His hobbies during his life were hunting, fishing, trapping, square dancing and being with his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald Ward; and a sister, Joan Stockstell. He is survived by his wife, Virma Ward of Anderson, IA; son, David Ward and wife Suwan of Anderson; 5 grandchildren, Tyler Ward, Ashley Ervin and husband Terner, Robert Roop, Philip Roop and Scott Roop; 6 great grandchildren; sister, Joyce Philbrick and husband Jim of Gillette, WY; 4 brothers, Cecil Ward of Riverton, IA, Darwin Ward and wife Betty of Evans, CO, Roger Ward and wife Bonnie of Sidney, IA and Charles Ward and wife Rosemary of Riverton; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Koelliker and husband Art of Hamburg, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA with Pastor Craig Eberly of the Sidney Victory Life Church officiating. Visitation will be open after 6:00 PM Wednesday and the family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Funeral Chapel. Memorials will go to the family’s choice. Interment will be in the Riverton, IA Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Williams-Jobe-Gibson American Legion Post #128 of Sidney.
