Mary Elizabeth Daniels, age 99 of Auburn, passed away Friday, November 2, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society in Auburn, Nebraska. She was born in “Little Italy” in Kansas City, Missouri on December 23, 1918, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Herson) Zeto.
Marie spent her early life in Kansas City, helping care for her father and two brothers, then working at various jobs including in a glove factory, at a photo printing shop, in a department store, and as an elevator attendant.
On January 2, 1960 she was united in marriage to Joseph Bernard Daniels, Jr. Joe was a widower and Marie became a housewife and helped him raise his children while he worked as a special carrier for the United States Postal Service. They made their home in Kansas City until Joe retired, when they moved to Edwards, Missouri on January 1, 1974. Many of Marie’s best memories were of her years spent living in a small home on the Lake of the Ozarks, where Joe fished and golfed and Marie worked with the volunteer fire department and joined the Rebekah’s, where she was eventually elected Noble Grand. She also acted as hostess when the local priest celebrated special Masses in their home for “the Lake People”. Marie was also a championship bowler!
Joe passed away in 1998 and Marie moved to Auburn, Nebraska in 2002 with her best friend Barbara Bolen and her little black Pomeranian, Ginger. She lived in her house along Highway 136 until a few months ago, when health issues forced her to move to Good Sam.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Mary Elizabeth, her husband Joe, and her two brothers Joseph and John Zeto. She is survived by many stepchildren, nieces and nephews, and will be greatly missed by the many friends she made here in Auburn.
