Mildred “Millie” Harms
July 24, 1929 - February 6, 2019

Mildred “Millie” Mae (Straube) Harms, 89 of Syracuse, passed away on February 6th 2019 at the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center. She was born July 24th 1929 to Godfrey and Agnes (Rulla) Straube at Burr, Nebraska.

She was baptized in the Christian Faith on October 6th 1929 at St John’s Lutheran Church, Sterling. She was confirmed at Hope Lutheran church on April 18, 1943 by the Rev C.J. Kumpf. Her confirmation verse was taken from the book of Psalm 37:4, “Delight your-self in the Lord and he shall give you the desires of your heart.”

Millie graduated from the Burr High School. She attended Peru State Teachers College and taught school 6 years before she married. She and Eddie Harms were united in marriage at St. John’s Lutheran church, Sterling, on October 26, 1952. Two children were born to this union, Timothy Edward on October 19th 1953 and a daughter, Tanya Elisa on her father’s birthday, December 22, 1958.

Millie is survived by her husband: Eddie Harms; Children and spouses: Tim and Billie Joy Harms, Tanya and Greg Christian; Grandchildren: Mathew Daniel and Michael Edward Harms; Sister and spouse: Dorothy and Dale Johnson; Brother in law: Bob Salomons.

Preceded in death by mother and father, Agnes and Godfrey; dear brother Richard (Dick), sister in law Nora Straube, and dear sisters Ruth Salomons, Martha Brinkman, and brother in law Don Brinkman.

“Millie”, as everyone called her, enjoyed Music, Dancing, Sports (Go Big Red), Art Work, and Travelling. She was known as the Banner lady having designed and made the banners in church. She loved her yard and flowers and enjoyed gardening. She assisted Eddie in his farming and bulldozing acting as the business secretary. Together they rebuilt, remodeled and decorated five different homes.

She was active in her church serving in many capacities at local, state and district levels until her stroke in 2008. Even with her disabilities, her strong will provided the determination to remarkably improve her ability to swallow, talk, and even walk (with assistance). Eddie would steal Millie away from the nursing home to attend weddings, reunions or just to take a drive around the country side. She was given almost 11 extra years since her stroke for us to love and enjoy her presence.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 11th 2019 at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Syracuse. Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 10th from 9 A.M. until 9 P.M. with family greeting friends from 2-4 P.M. at the funeral home in Syracuse.

Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
