Thelma L. Johnson, age 97, died in Rancho Cucamonga, California Friday, June 15, 2018 after a brief illness. Thelma was born August 1, 1920 in Fremont County, Iowa and resided in Fremont County for more than 90 years. She graduated from Thurman High School in 1938. She worked as a telephone operator in Thurman for several years prior to and during World War II. She married Loren “Cotton” Johnson, Jr. in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1943. Thelma and Cotton resided on the farm in McPaul for many years.
Thelma was a member of the United Methodist Church and participated in church activities faithfully for many years; singing in the church choir in Thurman, providing altar flowers for Sunday services at the Sidney church from her backyard garden, baking many pies for the Methodist rodeo food stand and other church events, as well as cooking for and serving in the stand during the rodeo.
Thelma was an accomplished gardener, cook, and seamstress. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nellie Herker, her husband, Loren R. “Cotton” Johnson, and siblings, Cecil Herker and Eunice Hamilton. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Ronk of Rancho Cucamonga, California, granddaughter, Amanda Flamberg, grandson, Matthew Hawley, and great granddaughter, Olivia Flamberg, all of whom live in Southern California where Thelma spent her final years. Though she resided in California the last five years of her life, Iowa was always her home.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the Thurman, IA Cemetery with Rev. Jan Phillips of the Thurman United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be with the family greeting friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday, July 2, 1028 at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA. Memorials will go to the Thurman United Methodist Church or Sidney Fire & Rescue.
