PERU – It looks like Mother Nature could have an impact on the beginning of the 2018 Peru State softball season. The Bobcats are scheduled to begin their season by hosting Hastings and the College of St. Mary on Feb. 24 and Feb. 28. While it might be dry, it might be a little too cool to put the bats and balls in play.
Four teams on the Peru State schedule either are rated or are receiving votes in the 2017-18 NAIA Softball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll which was released on Jan. 16. Those teams include Ottawa (Kan.) – #13, Grand View (Iowa) – #21, Clarke (Iowa) – receiving votes, Tabor (Kan.) – receiving votes.
It is also to be noted that the Bobcats find themselves up against four previous conference champions or those who made the conference post-season tournament. These four teams include Hastings College (GPAC Champions), Ottawa University (KCAC regular season title), Tabor College (KCAC runner up), and Grand View (Iowa) from the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart).
The Bobcats waste no time in taking on a top opponent as they taking on Tabor in their third game of the season on March 6 at 1 p.m. in Hillsboro, Kan.
On March 10 at 1 p.m. Peru State kicks off the start of the Heart divisional play when they face the Culver-Stockton Wildcats on a road game in Canton, Mo., at 1 p.m. Peru State will play the other teams in the North Division on a home-and-away basis and then play each team in the South Division one time for a total of 16 conference games (all double-headers).
After traveling to Culver-Stockton and Lawrence, Kan., to face Haskell Indians Nation, the Bobcats will have a tough matchup against #13 Ottawa University (Kan.) at home on March 15 at 2 p.m. The Braves finished last season’s play with a 40-19 record and 18-4 in KCAC conference play.
On March 18, Peru will host Clarke University (Iowa) at 1 p.m. for a Heart Conference game. Last season the Pride finished with a 41-12 record and a 0.774 winning percentage and 26-8 in the Heart. On April 8, the Bobcats will then travel to Dubuque, Iowa, to face the Pride on their home turf at 1 p.m.
On April 3, the #21 Grand View Vikings (Iowa) will travel to Peru for a tough Heart North division match up at 2 p.m. The ‘Cats will then face the Vikings again on April 12 in Des Moines, Iowa, at 3 p.m. Last season Grand View finished 42-15 overall with a 0.737 winning percentage and 27-8 in Heart conference play.
Senior Day is planned for Saturday, April 21, at 1 p.m. when the Culver-Stockton Wildcats visit the Centennial Complex.
The Heart post-season tournament will feature the top teams from the conference and will begin on May 2 with the bottom four seeds playing in the first round. The tournament will be held in Springfield, Mo.
The 17 players have been working hard during the preseason fall semester and are preparing for their season opener against the Broncos.
