PERU -A second-year coach. A very challenging schedule. Seven of first 12 games against preseason ranked opponents with another receiving votes. First 11 games on the road.
When one takes a look at the upcoming 2018 Peru State volleyball schedule, even a casual observer could say that the Bobcats will find out where they are at athletically early in the season.
Eight teams on the schedule either are rated or are receiving votes in the 2018 NAIA Women’s Volleyball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll which was released on Aug. 14. In fact, the first five of the first seven opponents the ‘Cats will face are ranked in the Top 25.
Peru State will face its first ranked opponent on Wednesday, Aug. 22, when they travel to Fremont to face the Midland Warriors at 7 p.m. Midland is preseason ranked 13th.
The following Tuesday, the Bobcats will be in Orange City, Iowa, to take on Northwestern College at 7:30 p.m. The Red Raiders are preseason ranked seventh in the NAIA.
The Bobcats’ first tournament will be the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Tournament, hosted by Bellevue University, which will be competed on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 in Bellevue. In that tournament, the ‘Cats will face #23 Ottawa (Kan.) and #12 Montana Tech.
On Sept. 5, the ‘Cats will face Bellevue in Bellevue at 7 p.m. The Bruins come into the season ranked 21st.
The following weekend Peru State will be competing in the Five Points Bank Classic hosted by Hastings College on Sept. 7 and 8. The ‘Cats will face Kansas Wesleyan, who is receiving votes, and Columbia (Mo.), who is preseason ranked 14th.
The home opener is the following week on Sept. 11 when the Bobcats host Grand View (Iowa) at 7 p.m. The Vikings who the conference regular season and tournament titles last year and come into the season ranked ninth.
This will also be the first Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) as the conference is moving into divisional play. Peru State will play the other teams in the North Division on a home-and-away basis and then play each team in the South Division one time for a total of 18 conference matches.
The rest of the season will be primarily Heart competition with two non-conference matches figuring into the schedule.
Senior Recognition Night is planned for Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. when the William Penn (Iowa) Statesmen visit the AWAC.
The Heart post-season tournament will feature the top teams from the conference and will begin on Oct. 31 with the bottom four seeds playing in the first round.
The coaches and 19 players have begun their preseason practices and are working toward their showdown with Midland on Aug. 22.
