PERU – It was senior night for five Peru State volleyball players and those five did everything they could to make sure they would go out on the right note.
In a match that was extremely important to the Bobcats’ post-season play, the five seniors combined to get 63 of 68 kills and six of seven solo blocks to help lead Peru State to a big win over the visiting William Penn (Iowa) (WPU) Statesmen.
The ‘Cats ended up winning 25-13, 24-26, 23-25, 25-14, 15-13 to improve to 12-19 overall and more importantly, the Bobcats picked up their eighth Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) win to seal the north division third seed. William Penn finished their regular season with a 19-15 record and 6-12 in the Heart.
Peru State hit .213 while holding WPU to .124. The ‘Cats had 62 assists compared to 48 for the Statesmen. The Bobcats had seven service aces and five errors while only allowing two aces by William Penn who had six serving errors.
Yorgelys Jaspe led the Bobcats with a match-high 20 kills. Taylor Thompson had a game-high three service aces. Claire Cudney tied for game-high honors with 35 digs. Nadja Janjevic finished with a match-high four solo blocks and added two block assists.
Peru State has one more regular-season match and that will take place Monday night when they face the second-ranked Grand View Vikings in Des Moines, Iowa, at 7 p.m. The Vikings are 28-0 overall and are a perfect 17-0 in the Heart action.
