PERU, Neb. – After averaging 6.80 digs per set in the Bobcats’ three matches this week, Peru State libero Cristina Viera (Montevideo, Uruguay) was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) Defender of the Week.
This was Viera’s second time being honored during the 2017 season.
Viera had 33 digs in the four-set loss to Central Methodist (Mo.) on Saturday. She added 19 digs in Peru State’s sweep of Graceland and had 16 in the loss to Missouri Valley.
Also, Viera added four service aces and was 61 of 63 in service receptions for a 96.8% receiving percentage.
Presently, Viera is second in the NAIA averaging 6.5 digs per game, second in total digs with 722, and is 17 in service aces with 51. She is leading the Heart in both service aces and digs per set.
At the end of the week, Viera now has the seventh spot on the single-season digs records and is now ninth in career digs with 1,619 in just two seasons.
Peru State will be facing two more Heart opponents at home this week. They will host Clarke (Iowa) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and then host Culver-Stockton (Mo.) at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27. The Friday night match will also be senior night for six seniors!
