William Penn Jumps to Early Lead to Defeat Short-Handed Peru State

PERU, Neb. – The Statesmen of William Penn (WPU) (Iowa) scored the final 12 points of the first quarter and never trailed after that point. WPU defeated the Peru State women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon 71-35 in Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) action.

The much taller Statesmen grabbed 50 rebounds compared to 20 for the Bobcats.

Maddy McPhillips (Omaha) led Peru State with 12 points.

With the win, the Statesmen improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the Heart. The ‘Cats fell to 3-6 and are now 0-2 in conference action.

The Bobcats will have one more regular-season game before 2017 ends. Peru State will head to Atchison, Kan., on Dec. 9 to take on Benedictine. The preseason ninth-ranked Ravens are 8-2 overall and are 1-1 in the Heart. Benedictine lost to MidAmerica Nazarene but topped Avila on Saturday.
