A Council Bluffs father whose 2-year-old shot himself with a handgun has been charged with a felony, authorities said.
The 29-year-old father was charged with child endangerment causing bodily injury and released on the condition that he appear at his next court hearing.
On Aug. 19, first responders went to the Sterling Inn in Clive, Iowa, and found a 2-year-old boy with gunshot wounds on his chest and neck.
The Clive Police Department said the boy’s father left a loaded, unsecured .45 handgun in a suitcase. The boy picked up the handgun and pulled the trigger. The bullet entered his upper chest, passed through his neck and lodged in a wall, police said.
The boy’s father has a valid permit to carry a handgun, officials said. Clive police have said the boy’s condition is improving.
