Iowa man dies, four injured in two-vehicle collision Saturday night

One person died and four others were injured Saturday night in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 71 in Iowa’s Cass County.

Ronald R. Nelson, 72, of Exira, Iowa, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Iowa State Patrol. Nelson was traveling north on Highway 71 about 7:45 p.m. in a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado when it failed to stop for a red light at a bridge construction zone northeast of Atlantic.

Investigators determined that the pickup “failed to stop for an unknown reason” and rear-ended a 2011 Ford Explorer driven by Travis W. Anhofer, 34, of Exira. The pickup entered the east ditch and the SUV was pushed into the open lane on the bridge, blocking Highway 71.

Anthofer, and his passengers, Kaitlin Anthofer, 33, Gavin Anthofer, 9, and Ryleigh Anthofer, 7, were transported by family to the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic to be checked for injuries.
