Metropolitan Community College speaker series to start in September; other higher education news

Metropolitan Community College will start the Business Leader Speaker Series next month.

Local business leaders and entrepreneurs will speak at various Metro locations. The series will take place between Sept. 13 and Nov. 1.

Each event will include a catered meal followed by a question-and-answer session. The charge for each event varies, although it’s typically $19. There is a package deal as well.

Speakers include Christine Hill of AOI Corp., Gregg Fripp of Whispering Roots and Othello Meadows of Seventy-Five North.

Crown College will offer on-site classes in Omaha

Crown College, a biblically based institution, will start offering on-site classes in Omaha at The Porch at Old Mill, a building at 10845 Harney St. The Omaha program will begin Aug. 27.

Classes in four degree areas — bachelor’s programs in psychology/counseling, Christian ministry and biblical studies, and a master’s in counseling — will be available on-site.

Students will take some of their classes on-site and the remainder through Crown’s online format.

Crown is a not-for-profit college that started in Minnesota in 1916.

New UNK residence hall will be fully occupied

The University of Nebraska at Kearney announced that its new residence hall, Village Flats, has reservations that will fill the facility.

The $16 million residence hall includes 68 one-bedroom and 31 two-bedroom apartments. Village Flats is designed to accommodate upperclassmen, graduate students and nontraditional students from UNK as well as the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Kearney programs.

The residence hall includes wireless Internet, cable, utilities and furniture.

Village Flats is the first building to go up on the former cropland south of U.S. Highway 30, which is to be the University Village development.
